Premiership players but once draft hopefuls, Chris Judd, Andrew Embley, Daniel Kerr and Adam Hunter were named in the AIS-AFL Academy team of the decade on Friday.
The Academy celebrates its 10th anniversary and since 1997 has awarded 300 scholarships; a formality of 30 each year after the NAB AFL under-16 championships.
Impressively, graduates now make up 18 percent of AFL lists with more poised to join the ranks via Saturday’s National AFL Draft including highly-rated pair Scott Gumbleton (2004) and Matthew Leuenberger (2005).
Hunter, a 1998 graduate, was named at full-back with Judd (2001) in the centre, Embley (1998) on a wing and Kerr (2000) as rover.
The quartet has played more than 450 games between them with captain Judd claiming the Brownlow Medal in 2004 and a Norm Smith Medal in 2005 before his deputy Embley won the latter as part of this year’s premiership triumph.
The indefatigable Kerr and star defender Hunter, who can be so dominant in attack as well, are also among their side’s key players.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou, joined by a number of past graduates at the breakfast at AFL House, acknowledged the AIS’ contribution to the program over 10 years.
“The AIS-AFL Academy is a key part of our NAB AFL Rising Stars Program and has consistently produced footballers that excel on and off the field. We are pleased to be involved with the AIS, a world-class organisation that offers scholarships to our best young players,” he said. The team:B: Andrew Walker (Carlton), Adam Hunter (West Coast), Joel Corey (Geelong)
