Young defender Eric Mackenzie has continued his push for an opportunity at elite level with another strong performance for Claremont in the WAFL competition last weekend.
Mackenzie, who played one game last year, had his early season progress stymied by a knee injury early in the practice matches, but has been a consistently good contributor for the Tigers in the last month.
While Claremont suffered another disappointing defeat, Mackenzie was used in a variety of roles and certainly filled his commitment to the team cause.
Claremont v Peel
Chad Jones
Chad played full forward all game and played well, making the most of his opportunities which were limited due to Peel having the ball in their half of the field as well as Claremont’s poor disposal into their forward line. He moved well in his first game back from an ankle injury and will be better for the run.
James Thomson
Started the game in a run-with role opposed to Haines and kept one of Peel’s most dangerous players to just a handful of first half possessions. Thomson also presented well on a number of occasions in the forward line but was not used. In the second half he was moved onto Rosa who also did not do a lot of damage.
Pat McGinnity
McGinnityplayed with great composure and took on the opposition on a number of occasions. He had a good battle with Brock O’Brien on the wing for the majority of the game but was moved onto Haydn Ballantyne half-way through the last quarter. Ballantyne had already kicked seven goals to that stage and finished with eight.
Eric Mackenzie
Used in avariety of positions from full-back, to a half-back flank and ruck-rover, Mackenzie gave a strong contest in each role. He played with aggression and intensity around the contest and had a physical presence on the game. He was dragged out of the play in the second half by his opponent who ran away from the contest and started very wide and deep in the pocket.
Lewis Stevenson
Lewis played midfield and half-forward flank for the majority of the game. Lewis was very good when his intensity was up and he ran hard. He showed his class in the second quarter, kicking two great goals on the run. A solid performance despite his tag in the second half.
Ashley Arrowsmith
After starting on a half-back flank, he gathered some early disposals but did not use the ball as well as he could. In the second and third quarters his ground time was limited and he had little impact on the game, playing mainly in the forward line. He got himself back into the game in the second half of the last quarter and finished off strongly.
Perth v Subiaco
Scott Selwood
Scott played on the wing and rotated through half-forward, where his work rate was good and he covered the ground well. Scott’s ball skills were also polished and his intensity around the contested ball was good. Scott injured his leg running back into a contested mark late in the last quarter and did not return.
Will Sullivan
Will played in the ruck opposed to Newick and while beaten in the ruck contests, he won a number of good centre ruck taps, resulting in goals. He presented on a number of occasions, but was not used.
West Perth v Swan Districts
Mark Seaby
After a slow start to the game where he exerted little influence on the contest, Seaby finished with a lively last quarter effort. Will be looking to build on the effort and exert a more concentrated output next week.
Tony Notte
Playing at both half-forward and full-forward, he presented strongly and offered a good marking target for his teammates. On occasions when he could not hold on to his mark, he recovered to apply pressure at ground level and was one of his team’s strongest contributors. Finished his game off with two goals and missed one opportunity he should have converted.
Callum Wilson
Played as a key defender and certainly did all that was asked of him in a game that South Fremantle dominated. The Bulldogs were rarely placed under any pressure and when East Perth did venture forward, Wilson was there to curtail many of their attacking sorties. He generally played from in front and when the ball hit the deck he recovered quickly and was a strong rebounding option.
