The honourable Colin Barnett, along with West Coast Eagles sharp-shooter Josh Kennedy, is encouraging children across Western Australia to get reading this summer after the launch of the Premier’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The challenge, which started on December 2 and runs until January 2014, encourages children aged from birth to year 10 to hit the books in support of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA.

Kennedy, and avid reader himself, says it’s a great way for kids to develop essential life skills.

“I’ve always loved reading since I was a kid,” he said.

“It’s one of the most important skills in life you can have.

“It helps you do well in school, learn about the world and reach your goals.

“You only need to read for about 15 minutes a day, which isn’t so much.”

Mr Barnett said the challenge had raised more than $50,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA since the partnership began in 2011 and encouraged all WA families to get involved and take up the Premier’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Apart from supporting a great cause, Kennedy says there are plenty of other reasons to get involved.

“All children who finish the challenge and send in a completed entry form go into the draw to win an overseas adventure holiday for the family, plus $2,500 towards your accommodation,” he said.

“All that plus raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA and helping people living in our great state with MS.

“I really everyone will take up the Challenge and get into reading these summer holidays.”
