When you think of West Coast Eagles supporters, you think of their dedication to the team, and the desire to never miss a match. For some supporters, the tyranny of distance means their devotion is from afar, and on the TV screen.

For William Warren, the distance between his home and Domain Stadium has meant that until our recent match against St Kilda, he’d never been able to watch us play in person. As our round eight Member of the Round, the club was delighted to have William as our guest.

“I’ve been an avid Eagles fan since their inception, and I’ve converted all three of my grandchildren into Eagles fans as well, even though their parents barrack for other teams,” William said.

A footy fan ever since his Nanna invited him to watch a WAFL match between South Fremantle and Subiaco, William estimates that he’s missed watching only five of our games since we entered the league in 1987. So what keeps him glued to the couch each week?

“I love the physical side of the game and the intense rivalries starting with Geelong back in the nineties, then the rivalry with Sydney (and now) with Fremantle.”

Even with recent health issues for William and his family, he never misses the chance to watch his beloved Eagles take the field, even if means taping the games so he can make 250km round trips for medical treatment.

“I have to record every Saturday game and then get home without finding out the result from anyone that knows.

“I just close myself off from everyone until I finish watching!”

As an extra special treat for being our Member of the Round, not only was William on the ground as the team ran out to take on the Saints, he was also able to toss the coin before the match for skippers Shannon Hurn and St Kilda’s Nick Riewoldt.
