The West Coast Eagles are proud to be launching Eagle’s Edge, a new purpose-written book and accompanying interactive whiteboard resource for Western Australian primary school students.

The club, with support from principal community partner BHP Billiton has created the story and supporting national curriculum interactive activities through collaboration with Olympic gold medallist and author Sally Carbon and Broome-based artist Ushan Boyd.

The Eagle’s Edge electronic resource contains an interactive e-book with audio, pop-up facts, hidden Western Australian animals, a unique in-class fitness program with images inside West Coast Eagles’ gym, and an editable text. As well, West Coast has provided over 28 activities for years one to six, all in line with the national curriculum.

Speaking at the launch of the book at Lockridge Primary School this morning, West Coast Eagles midfielder, Mark Hutchings, says it’s a terrific way to engage with students.

“It’s a great read, with plenty of educational value," said Hutchings.

“It’s great getting out to the primary schools, mixing with the kids and having a bit of fun.

“We’re just here to come along to spread the message to give it their best,” he said.

Delivered through the Eagles Rock My School Program, Eagle’s Edge has been built to inspire and educate students across the state through the medium of football.

“Obviously they know us as players, but whatever they want to be whether it’s a footballer or anything else they want to be, they can achieve it as long as they try their best,” Hutchings added.

Author Sally Carbon says it’s terrific to team up with the West Coast Eagles in such a worthwhile project.

“It’s pretty cool that Eagles footballers will sit with kids and read them this story. There has been some great research showing the value of learning through the medium of sport.

“People don’t realise how much sporting clubs of this kind do for the community and to invest in helping WA students with their literacy skills is a mighty fine contribution,” said Carbon.

The Eagles Rock My School program is one of a suite of Eagles in the Community programs, which are committed to success off the field. This year the club will reach 600 schools and 120,000 students throughout WA.

The Eagles Rock My School is a two-part, values-based program presented by current and former West Coat Eagles players. It delivers positive health lifestyle and educational messages. Part two sees schools receive a follow-up visit a current West Coast Eagle player to conduct either a football clinic or reading session.
