West Coast fans got a glimpse of how the defence might look without skipper Darren Glass. And it wasn’t all bad.

While everyone would hope the star defender will continue beyond, the defensive unit is in good shape, particularly with Eric Mackenzie leading the way.

Glass missed the game with a hip injury which should clear in time for him to play next Saturday against Port.

Mackenzie has developed in the last couple of seasons where he has stood the opposition major forward target and again he did a job against powerhouse Cat Tom Hawkins.

Hawkins still kicked three goals, but given the weight of football going inside Geelong’s attacking 50 metre arc, that indicated a strong effort from the man nicknamed “Easy.”

Mackenzie was the victor in most of the one-on-one battles, read the play superbly and was prepared to come off his man to impact the contest.

While there were probably 10 Cats who were better than the Eagles’ best player, Mackenzie stuck to his task manfully, given Geelong went inside 50 about 60 times.

Others in the defensive half to play strongly included Mitch Brown, who continues to grow as a player of substance, while Jamie Bennell, Elliot Yeo and Xavier Ellis provided strong rebound.

There is a thought that quality teams are built from defence and if that is the case, the Eagles have a strong platform from which to launch.
