WEST Coast ruck recruit Scott Lycett was given no guarantees leading into last week's NAB AFL Draft, but the promising South Australian was widely tipped to be snared by Port Adelaide in the first round.

The 202cm, 98kg ruckman played senior football with the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL in 2010 and it seemed logical that the Power would use its No.16 pick to secure some homegrown talent.

As things turned out, Port Adelaide selected Sandringham utility Ben Jacobs and West Coast couldn't pass on the highly-rated Lycett when he was available at the Eagles' pick 29.

Far from disappointed to have been overlooked by one of his hometown clubs, Lycett launched into pre-season training with West Coast on Wednesday and said he couldn't be happier with how the draft played out.

"It's been my dream to hopefully end up on an AFL list one day and I guess I'm one of those lucky kids. I'm just really happy to be here," the 18-year-old said.

"I just wanted to get on an AFL list and hopefully prove myself to play an AFL game one day.

"I had about one meeting with Port Adelaide. Everyone else thought I was going to go there [but] it didn't really bother me. I just wanted to hear my name get called out."

Lycett, who trained alongside fellow draftees Andrew Gaff and Jack Darling at Claremont Oval on Wednesday, was considered the second-best ruckman in the draft and he has modelled his game on new teammate Dean Cox.

Now playing alongside the four-time All Australian, as well as ruck prodigy Nic Naitanui, Lycett said he had plenty to learn both as a ruckman and a forward.

"I've been playing predominantly in the ruck the last couple of years, but I've been lucky enough to play forward when I was younger, so I guess it's another string to my bow," he said.

"I don't just want to play one position; you're more dangerous when you play two, so I'm pretty lucky in the respect that I can play two positions.

"I'm here with them, so I've got a lot to learn off them and I'm sure they're going to teach me a lot. That's going to make me a better player."
