Champion midfielder Daniel Kerr ticked the first box in his quest to regain a place in the West Coast Eagles running brigade with a quality performance for East Fremantle in the WAFL at the weekend.

The diminutive ball of muscle has had issues with a knee injury which has prevented him from running at AFL intensity in recent matches, but with 35 possessions, three tackles and three goals, he met that KPI on the weekend.

Now it is a matter of how he pulls up after the hit-out as to whether he earns a shot at the gun Essendon midfield at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Kerr was the stand-out performer in second tier football at the weekend, ensuring the 2005 Brownlow Medal runner-up is again on the match committee shortlist.

Adam Selwood and Pat McGinnity were others who thrust their names to the forefront of the selectors’ collective mind when they sit down on Wednesday to discuss the line-up to confront the Bombers.

Selwood, who played deep back for East Perth against Claremont, shutting down the dangerous Paul Medhurst, was later injected into the midfield where he maintained his output and was arguably his team’s best player.

McGinnity, playing for the Tigers, enjoyed a run through the midfield, had 26 possessions and rounded off his performance with three goals.

Forward Brad Dick had 14 possessions, six marks and three goals in a solid display for East Fremantle, while Cale Morton and Matt Rosa were key contributors for East Perth.

Rosa accumulated 22 possessions and laid six tackles, while Morton had 17 touches on a wing, took six marks and also finished his game off with three goals.

Perth pair Fraser McInnes and Simon Tunbridge were handy without being outstanding for Perth. McInnes, after a slow start, was strong after quarter-time, with 13 disposals, seven marks and 14 hit-outs, while Tunbridge kicked two goals from 10 possessions and five marks.
