A number of senior players who have found themselves on the periphery of team selection pushed their cause for a return with strong efforts in the WAFL at the weekend.

Adam Selwood, Matt Rosa, Andrew Embley and Cale Morton all excelled in the second tier competition to ensure their name tags will be thrown into the mix as the match committee seeks the right structure to attack Geelong at Patersons Stadium on Saturday night.

Selwood was outstanding for East Perth against Subiaco, both in defence and through the midfield.

He started at half-back and was solid in the opening two quarters, before moving into the middle where he took control, picking up 21 possessions, to finish with match figures of 28 possessions and six marks.

In the same game, Rosa and Morton were also prominent. Rosa accumulated 33 possessions, largely on a wing, but also spent time in the middle, while Morton had 21 disposals and was at his best in the second half, capping off his day with three goals.

Andrew Embley, the 2006 Norm Smith medallist who is closing in on 250 senior games, was also influential for Swan Districts. He picked up 24 disposals and took 10 marks in a clinical hard-running display.

Jamie Bennell continues to play his role in defence for Swans and had 16 possessions, took six marks and laid three tackles in another polished display.

Perth pair Fraser McInnes and Simon Tunbridge performed their tasks against West Perth, but the Falcons proved too strong. McInnes played much of the game in the uncustomary role of a ruckman, but had 22 hit-outs and also had 14 possessions and two marks.

Tunbridge played as a defensive forward opposed to former Eagle Jordan Jones and melded that focus with a nice blend of offensive football, having 14 possessions and seven marks. Both he and McInnes kicked a goal.

Defender Jacob Brennan had the unusual experience of playing reserves for Subiaco because East Fremantle was one of several teams having a bye. He had 15 possessions, but most importantly came through the game unscathed.
