The West Coast Eagles achieved the most important outcome in a practice match involving an even mix of players with East Perth at Patersons Stadium tonight, escaping the final hit-out of the pre-season without injury.

On a night when 17 West Coast-listed players were involved and no scores were displayed at the ground, it was all about topping up the playing loads of those who needed an extra game just to get them ready for round one when West Coast opens their season against the Western Bulldogs on Sunday week.

Inaugural John Worsfold medallist Matt Priddis and vice-captain Scott Selwood worked hard through the midfield before heading for the showers at three-quarter-time along with defender Ashley Smith, who had a bundle of the football in the third term after being steady throughout.

Xavier Ellis and Nic Naitanui were rested late in the game, having done enough to convince the match committee they’re ready for action and both Will Schofield, in defence, and Simon Tunbridge, playing midfield and forward, were also influential.

With the exception of Smith, all of those players were in the Eagles yellow training jumper, while Jeremy McGovern and Blayne Wilson were solid down back in the East Perth strip. Dylan Main worked hard up and down the ground and Pat McGinnity was a consistent four-quarter performer.

Jacob Brennan showed some trademark dash out of defence, Adam Carter was also strong in the back half and Brandt Colledge was among his team’s best.

Fraser McInnes presented well at centre half-forward, while Will Maginness did not have the night he was looking for, with a solid knock forcing him out of the game early.

East Perth fans would have been impressed with the impact of players like Steven Payne, Craig Wulff, Freddie Clutterbuck, Scott Jones and Julian Locantro.
