WEST Coast midfielder Scott Selwood expects a response from the Eagles next week against Port Adelaide after Geelong thrashed the top of the ladder team on Saturday night.

He did not think lack of effort was behind the 75-point belting Geelong handed out, but rather a case of the Cats being way too good.

Selwood said there were lessons aplenty for the team which had been touted as a contender after strong victories in the first three rounds.

"We'll stand up next week. We'll learn from that and respond," Selwood said.

Selwood – who stood beside his brother, Cats' skipper Joel, at the first bounce but didn’t match him during the game – said that everything the Eagles tried in order to stay in the contest was countered.

"We brought numbers up to the contest and they were just too good for us. They beat us at the contest and then they had the outside run. [We] tried to equalise it on the outside and then we got beaten on the inside," he said.

Selwood said the Eagles' lack of defensive and offensive running was the most disappointing aspect of the game.

"I thought we lacked that a little bit tonight and whether that was through inexperience or just tiredness I'm not too sure," Selwood said.

Geelong had 85 more kicks, 29 more handballs, 21 more handball receives, 78 more marks, 30 more inside 50s and also won the tackle count by 25.

However Selwood said the team would move on from the result reasonably quickly.

"[We're] not in a bad position," he said. "[We'll] come back in with a pretty strong side. Fingers crossed we can compete against Port [Adelaide]."
