West Coast Eagles legend Dean Cox has declared he intends to play out season 2014.

There has been much speculation he would join Darren Glass in retirement before the season ended, but when asked by Cox 6PR’s breakfast host Steve Mills if he was going to retire before then end of the season his response was unequivocal.

“No,” he said.

“(I’ll make a decision) When the season finishes.

“I think also after I finish, once I do have some rest and all that, if the body comes back really well, well then the decision will be at the end of the season.

“I think I can still offer a little bit around the footy club, that’s on the field and also off it.”

There had also been rumours that Cox was unhappy he was rested at the weekend, but the ruckman was quick to dispel those too.

“So I went and both myself and Simmo spoke on the Monday after the Hawthorn game and decided that my body needed a little bit of a break,” said Cox.

“So the decision was made just to really try and freshen up.

“I suppose it’s been spoken about for a couple of years and you’ve seen it across the AFL over the past couple of years is the older you get, the slower you do recover.

“It’s just a chance to have a break and get the body right.

“It’s about when I play can I play with the best freshness and the best possible football I want to play.

“If that means I have to have a week, if that means I have to have two, if that means I have to have a rest later on in the year, well so be it.”

“I’m 33 Millsy, a week off here and there, which is hard to swallow to start with because I hadn’t had one for so long.

“Once I got my head around it, it was good.”
