The entire West Coast Eagles squad was out in force on Monday, spread out across the state visiting schools taking part in the Eagles Schoolboys Cup competition.

Key defender Eric Mackenzie and gun forward Jack Darling popped in to visit St Stephens School in Duncraig to run the students through some drills as well as take part in question and answer time.

The Eagles Schoolboys Cup, a new partnership for the West Coast Eagles, involves year eight and nine students from across the state, with representation from every district and region in WA. The competition began in 1983, and will see over 135 schools involved in 2014.

These programs are integral to the development of grass roots football among the community and give the development of West Australian football a brighter future.

All the West Coast Eagles football development programs are proudly supported by our Principal Community Partner, BHP Billiton.

After talking to the students about goal-setting and healthy living and fitness, the Eagles duo fielded questions from the enthusiastic footballers, before signing plenty of autographs for anyone who wanted.

The students then went through a series of football training drills, before taking part in a scratch-match, which Mackenzie and Darling watched and lent some advice along the way.

Mackenzie says it was a great morning and a great way to spread some great messages with the students.

“The boy’s just love coming out to the schools, every time it seems they get more enthusiastic and enjoy things more and more,” he said.

“The Eagles Schoolboys Cup is a great competition, which involves so many students across WA, it has a great history and we’re glad we can be of help to keep everyone involved.

“The support we get from BHP Billiton cannot be understated, without their assistance competitions like this and various other community programs wouldn’t be possible.

“But thanks a lot to St Stephens for having us and being such great hosts; hopefully we can all come back soon.”
