The West Coast Eagles capped off NAIDOC Week celebrations by attending the City of Stirling 2014 NAIDOC Event at Herb Graham Recreation Centre.

Josh Hill, Jamie Bennell, Malcolm Karpany, Mark Hutchings and Nic Naitanui headed out for the event which included Welcome to Country, traditional dance, stalls, cultural displays and children's activities.

This year’s NAIDOC theme honours all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have fought in defence of our country from the Frontier Wars to those who have served with honour and pride in Australia’s military conflicts and engagements across the globe.

Josh Hill and Mark Hutchings hit the stage to talk about NAIDOC Week and its importance to both Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous people.

Both of these players are a part of the West Coast Eagles Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) working group, involved in the development and implementation of the clubs inaugural RAP.

All players then assisted in presenting the City of Stirling’s NAIDOC Awards on stage before defender Jamie Bennell presented the City of Stirling’s Mayor Giovanni Italiano with a signed Eagles guernsey on behalf of the club in support of the event.

Bennell says it was a great morning and a special week for all Australians.

“It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognize the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society,” he said.

“The whole event was terrific; everyone had a great time, thank you to the City of Stirling for putting on such an important event.”
