An ongoing partnership between West Coast Eagles and University of Western Australia (UWA) has seen Australian Rules football continue to grow in Western Australian primary schools with high culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

Last semester, ten metropolitan primary schools were involved in the program, which allows third-year Exercise & Health Science students at UWA to develop their teaching skills through providing opportunities for primary students to access and participate in Australian Rules football.

The students were engaged in skills clinics across the ten-week term whilst encompassing the values of fair play, respect and inclusivity.

As a part of the program, the new Australian Rules football participants also received some West Coast Eagles giveaways as well as tickets to a Western Australian Football League (WAFL) game to see how the game is played at a high level.

West Coast Eagles Community Engagement Coordinator James Grabski said the program is extremely beneficial for all involved.

“First and foremost, it is an opportunity for students from a multicultural background to experience a sport that is uniquely Australian which facilitates the assimilation process and breaks down barriers,” he said.

“The quality of UWA students is what makes this program possible and the feedback from teachers at the schools has been overwhelmingly positive which bodes well for its future success.”
