West Coast’s latest recruit, former baseball star Corey Adamson, completed the first stage of his induction back into football when he joined his new teammates on the training track today.

Adamson, who has switched back to football after six years with the San Diego Padres, wandered onto Patersons Stadium today at the end of a low-key training session and he was immediately put to the test.

As has become custom, the rest of the players formed a tunnel about 40 metres from goal, Adamson was handed the footy and amid taunts and cheers – aimed at breaking his concentration – he was asked to stride through the guard of honour and convert from about 35 metres.

The former schoolboy star, who earned all-Australian selection as a 15-year-old, duly slotted the goal with a precise drop punt.

Then came the next challenge, throwing a tennis ball from the goal square. Given Adamson was an outfielder, he was heavily favoured in this one. But he was pitted against some handy opposition.

Elliot Yeo, who apparently owns the team’s golden arm, went first and tossed the ball about 10 metres beyond the centre circles. Coach Adam Simpson then had a go and fell a couple of metres short of the mark.

Adamson then stepped forward, perhaps sensing the pressure, was deliberate and focussed as he propelled the ball, amid much cheering from his new teammates, about four or five metres beyond Yeo’s mark.
