In his first season at West Coast Eagles captain, Shannon Hurn has performed remarkably well in his new role, both on and off the field.

A marshal down back equipped with arguably the best kick in the competition, Hurn has led the young Eagles group to a nine and three record at the midway point of the season.

Despite the strong start, Hurn says there is still a long way to go in season 2015.

Eagles mid-year report

“We just want to improve on last year, so in that respect our goals for this year haven’t changed,” he said.

“Things can change very quickly, so you can’t look too far ahead.

“We have really enjoyed the first half of the season, we’re building each week.

“But we need to continue to take it week by week for the rest of the season, that’s what has served us well so far.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done, but we’re looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.”

Hurn, raised on a farm in the Barossa Valley in South Australia, says he used the bye to get home and see the family.

Bye adds balance

“I just shot back home to the farm,” he said.

“I got to see some local footy as well, but it was good to take it easy and spend time with the family.

“The break’s always good to freshen up mentally and physically, but now we’re back on deck and it’s back to work.”
