Season 2015 hasn’t gone 100 percent to plan for Xavier Ellis, but things are starting to turn around.

After starting the year with high hopes, the clever utility succumbed to a hamstring injury during the NAB Challenge and spent a considerable amount of time on the sidelines.

He returned to the Eagles side against Essendon, and while he was a little rusty, performed well before stepping things up a notch in a classy display against the Tigers in round 12.

Ellis had 24 disposals at the MCG last Friday night while also raking in 10 marks across half-back.

Eagles mid-year report

“I’m feeling good at the moment, the body is good and the boys are playing good footy,” he said.

“The unity in the group is terrific and it’s rubbing off on the way we’re playing.

“We’re playing together and when we do that we play some good footy.”

Ellis has endured a horror run of injuries in his time in the AFL, but says he’s determined to do everything he can to stay on the park and help the young Eagles squad build.

“I had a little setback over summer, but I’m feeling good now,” he said.

“It’s all about continuity and staying on the track and on the field.

“Yes I’ve had some injuries, but other players have been affected more than me, so I won’t complain.

“Now that I’m back playing, I’m just looking to make the most of it with the boys.

“I’m excited about what this group is building towards.”

Unity breeds success

Ellis, a country Victorian, resisted temptation to go home over the bye, instead preferring the warm Perth winter.

“I just stayed home and took it easy,” he said.

“The dog kept me pretty busy and it was good to spend some down time at home with my partner.

“It’s a long season, other guys probably needed the break more than me, but it’s a good chance to give the body a break.

“I’m looking forward to the rest of the season like everyone else.”
