Busy West Coast Eagles staffers are benefitting from a few extra hands in the lead up to finals, with three students from education provider SEDA joining their ranks this term.

SEDA is a leading provider of hands-on education that partners with peak industry organisations in the sports, arts and building fielders.

It provide students with industry opportunities and experiences they will not find anywhere else and promotes learning for life with a focus on preparing students for a successful future.

West Coast joined forces with SEDA for the first time in 2016 and students have been acquiring industry experience at Eagles events throughout the year, including match day promotions, membership events and community clinics.

Tayla Bothe, Samuel Handcock and Bailey Richards were recently offered an opportunity to gain further experience with the club by working at West Coast’s headquarters for a day a week throughout term three.

Students nominated their department of choice and Handcock, who has desires of working in the media in the future,  elected to shadow the Eagles’ communications team.

“I’ve got to sit in on a few interviews for injury reports and come out to see a few training sessions,” Handcock said.

“I’ve written some stuff and the guys are editing it and teaching me what they would write.”

SEDA students are encouraged to prepare themselves for life beyond school by taking advantage of the unique industry opportunities available to them.

“It’s more hands on learning than a normal high school,” said Bothe.

“We can get our WACE qualification and VET Certificates in Sport & Recreation, which allows us to go on to further study at university or whatever we choose to do.”

Luckily all three students are West Coast fans and count their highlights as working at club events and match days, in particular working with the players at community and holiday clinics.

Kim Hannah, Schools & Community Program Co-ordinator at West Coast, said the SEDA students have been invaluable at club events throughout the year.

“At any given event we have had three to 15 students helping out with set up, pack down and running activities for our members and fans,” said Hannah.

“To be able to offer Taylor, Sam and Bailey further insight into how the club runs with these placements is fantastic and they are mixing really well with our staff.”

Applications to start at SEDA in 2017 are open now.
