When it comes to football and in particular The West Coast Eagles, travelling hundreds of kilometres to catch the game, hasn’t been a problem for our Round 18, Member of the Round, Karen Higgs.
Originating from New Zealand and moving to Australia, Karen quickly discovered that the West Coast Eagles were going to be the team for her. She has been a member for 11 years, but a supporter since 1990, after settling in WA and believes her strong love of the game has been passed down from her Mum.
“Mum loves and watches lots of sport, so I guess it’s a part of me too.” Karen recalls, “My first live game was at the WACA in 1998 from memory where the West Coast Eagles defeated the Bulldogs after being down by around 50 points at quarter time. I was hooked from that day on.”
Now living in the Geraldton area, Karen has only missed one game this season, a round trip totalling 848 kilometres, often done on the same day.
“I mainly drive the distance, and have managed to fly a couple of times this year. Anything to see the game. Sometimes it’s a little difficult as I have teenagers, but somehow, we make it work.” Karen said.
Karen’s love of the game runs deep.
“I love footy season, full stop! I count the weeks then days until it begins again and love to watch the young guys develop.” Karen said.
But it’s not just the game itself she enjoys. There are many aspects to being a member and Karen’s social personality is definitely a part of the match day experience.
Karen continues, “I have sat in the same seats for the last 10 years with awesome fellow supporters who make the whole day lots of fun and who have also become my friends outside of football.”
When thinking back to earlier memories, along with most West Coast Eagles fans, her favourite memory of the club had to be the 2006 Grand Final win. Karen’s hopeful that the players continue to deliver the goods.
“I have attended the last three Grand Finals that the West Coast Eagles have appeared in and intend to be there the next time that they are too”.
