The West Coast Eagles lent a bit of star power to this week’s Foodbank WA School Food Appeal presentations.

Club captain and Foodbank WA ambassador Shannon Hurn took a break from his preparations for this Friday's match against Hawthorn to present Floreat Park Primary School with an award for donating the most kilos of food during this year's appeal.

Fifty one schools took part in the fourth instalment of the School Food Appeal and raised more than 6,500kg of food, which provides the equivalent of 13,500 meals for Foodbank WA.

Floreat Park Primary contributed 483kg of food, which will provide almost 1000 meals to West Australians in need.

Hurn, who has been a Foodbank ambassador since 2014, was full of praise for the School Food Appeal.

“Bringing a can to school seems like such a simple thing to ask but it makes a huge impact,” Hurn said.

“Foodbank WA supports more than 53,000 people a month throughout WA and the School Food Appeal is a big contributor to that. Floreat Park Primary has put in a great effort.”

West Coast have been working with Foodbank WA for the past four years and supports the charitable organisation by hosting an annual ‘Cans for a Cause’ day, where fans and members are encouraged to donate a can of non-perishable food at a designated Eagles’ match.

Foodbank WA is the largest hunger relief organisation in WA, supplying 6.5 million meals a year to families and children in need across WA via its six distribution branches.

“It’s incredible to think more than 9000 people in WA don’t have enough food to eat, each and every month,” Hurn said.

“Whatever we can do to raise awareness and encourage people to help is worth it.”

Foodbank WA chief executive Greg Hebble said the support for this year's School Food Appeal was overwhelming.

"It was great to see so many schools come on board from all areas across WA," he said.

"The community spirit involved in this annual food drive is inspiring."
