AFL 2017 JLT Community Series - West Coast v Fremantle

Eric Mackenzie was solid throughout the JLT Community Series

The depth and versatility of West Coast’s back line has the Eagles’ match committee bracing themselves for a tough week in the lead up to round one.

The Eagles are blessed with tall options down back.

One would assume All Australian Jeremy McGovern a lock to line up in round one, but with 2014 John Worsfold medallist Eric Mackenzie, Will Schofield and Tom Barrass all in good form, Adam Simpson and his selection team has some thinking to do.

Some pundits recently suggested Barrass had slipped ‘behind’ Mackenzie in the pecking order after being left out of Thursday’s clash with Melbourne, but West Coast general manager of football Craig Vozzo said that was hardly the case.

“Tommy is definitely not out of contention; [he’s] very much in the thick of things,” Vozzo told 6PR.

“We played a really strong team on Thursday (against Melbourne). Redden and Barrass were the two, effectively, ‘subs’, but we didn’t have any injuries so we didn’t have to call on them.

“We had a preconceived idea of playing 22 (against the Demons). We wanted to have a good look at Mackenzie against Melbourne.

“We look forward to that selection debate closer to the time.”
