AFL 2017 Round 04 - West Coast v Sydney

Sam Mitchell managed to play out the game against the Swans but he couldn't complete a fitness test to face the Hawks

West Coast Eagles midfielder Sam Mitchell says it didn't take him long to realise his ankle would not allow him to front up against Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday

Mitchell tried to prove his fitness to club medical staff at training this morning but he quickly realised his quest to play his old team was a futile exercise.

“It’s getting better by the day but it's not good enough for this week unfortunately,” Mitchell said.

“It wasn’t probably even good enough to be able to convince the doctors about whether or not I could play. I did a fitness test and got 10 per cent into it a realised it wasn’t going to be good enough.

“It’s unfortunate that I won’t be out there against the old Hawks on Sunday.”

Mitchell will remain in Perth and continue to rehabilitate his ankle in a bid to line up for his first offical Carlton Draught Derby next Saturday.
