The brave bid by tough midfielder Sam Mitchell to prove his fitness and play against his former club, Hawthorn, has ultimately fallen short.
Mitchell, who injured his ankle in the second quarter of the game against Sydney last week, did everything possible to recover and take the field against the club for whom he enjoyed a stellar career, but his quest was stymied.
He was not named in the 25-man squad to play the Hawks at the MCG on Sunday and will not travel with the team tomorrow.
Instead, he will continue to manage the injury and aim to return against Fremantle in round six.
The enforced absence of Mitchell paved the way for the return of forward Jack Darling, who missed the victory against the Swans because of his own ankle injury. He has been named in his customary position at centre-half-forward.
Also coming into the 25-man squad are midfielders Dom Sheed and Mark Hutchings and wingman/forward Malcolm Karpany.
They have been named on an extended interchange bench alongside Brad Sheppard, Chris Masten, Sharrod Wellingham and Jackson Nelson – all of whom were part of the Sydney triumph.
The Eagles will be looking for a bold showing against the Hawks at a venue that has not always brought the club the desired results.
A loss to Richmond at the ground a fortnight ago is the only blemish in an otherwise impressive start to the season.
