West Coast Eagles Luke Shuey, Mark Hutchings and Jonathan Giles brought smiles to the faces of some children doing it tough at Princess Margaret Hospital last Wednesday.

The players started their visit in the Megazone, an innovative recreational and leisure area offering patients and their families a friendly environment to enjoy each other’s company.

Hutchings and Giles signed autographs and posed for photos with thankful fans while Shuey challenged some of the patients to a variety of video games on offer in the facility.

Unfortunately, some children were unable to leave their wards, so the charitable trio took the fun to them.

The players made special visits to the 7teen and surgical and oncology wards to check in on some of their most passionate fans.

Shuey said it was heartening to know a simple visit could bring so much joy to the children.

“Some of these little ones are up against it, so it’s very rewarding to know that our presence brings a smile to their faces,” he said.

“We also learn a lot from these kids. The fight and resolve they display is inspiring and really puts everything into perspective.”

Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation Megazone manager Emma Bloxsidge said the children got a real kick out of meeting their sporting heroes.

“Our aim through Megazone is to provide opportunities for children, young people and their families to have a positive experience in hospital to heal through happiness,” she said.

“Visits like these from the West Coast Eagles can make children’s dreams come true by allowing them to meet their real life heroes. Not all heroes wear capes.”
