AFL 2017 Round 08 - Essendon v Geelong

Essendon medical staff say David Zaharakis will overcome a throat injury and line up against the Eagles on Sunday

Essendon’s David Zaharakis has been given the all clear to face West Coast at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Zaharakis copped an errant elbow to the throat from Geelong captain Joel Selwood during the Bombers’ big win over the Cats on Saturday night.

Essendon high performance manager Justin Crow said the midfielder – who collected 31 disposals, stuck five tackles and registered six inside 50 entries against Geelong – was free to play against the Eagles.

“Apart from a hoarse voice, David is good and we expect him to be ready for training on Thursday,” Crow told essendonfc.com.au.

However, the news is not as positive for Patrick Ambrose, who will have to wait at least another week to overcome a quad injury sustained during Essendon’s Anzac Day win over Collingwood.

Crow said the defender would have to wait at least another week to don the club’s red sash.

“Patty has made very good progress since his quad injury,” he revealed.

“He started kicking an Auskick-sized ball this week We’ll keep building him up and get him into some training kicking on his opposite side this Thursday.

“The way he’s progressing, it does leave the door ajar slightly for a potential return against Richmond.”
