East Perth will continue to back in its simplified game plan as it chases a fifth-straight win against West Perth on Monday.

Second-year Eagle Tom Cole says there was no reason for the Royals to stray away from the method that has helped them climb to sixth place on the WAFL ladder in recent weeks.

East Perth were lingering near the bottom of the table after going winless through the first five rounds of the season, but senior coach Luke Webster implemented a new, ‘back to basics’ strategy ahead of the club’s round six clash with Perth and the black and blue army has since been unstoppable.

“About a month ago Webby came to us with a pretty simplified game plan to make our game a lot more predictable,” Cole said.

“It just focused on the contest and getting the ball down our end of the ground. I think it’s made it a lot easier for the boys and it’s been working, so there’s no reason to go away from it. We’ll keep sticking to it.”

Winning the clearances and contested possession count will be imperative on Monday if the Royals have any hope of defeating WA Day derby rivals West Perth.

The third-place Falcons possess one of the WAFL’s most dynamic midfields, which is capable of taking the game away from any opponent.

“They have go some pretty handy mids; I think they chopped us up a little bit in that department earlier in the year,” Cole said.

“They’ve got some quality players across all lines, but their mids are very dangerous. If we can get the job done inside, I think we will be fine.”

While Cole is relying on East Perth’s engine room to set up the game, he is focused on recapturing the defensive flair and dare that helped him break into West Coast’s back six this time last year.

The 20-year-old has had a stop-start season in 2017. He succumbed to some sophomore niggles during the pre-season and missed the first five games of the year due to a quad injury.

Now he is determined to make the most of his clean bill of health, get his job done at the rear of the field for the Royals and vie for his third AFL appearance.

“It was tough watching on from the sidelines when I was injured, but my fitness base and footy base is all starting to build back up now,” Cole said.

“It’ll be good to get some continuity after all these byes in the WAFL. I just want to start playing some consistent footy and hopefully start pushing for AFL selection in the near future.

“I think all us boys in the WAFL are waiting in the wings. It’s always in the back of our minds. We’re wanting to impress each week by playing consistent footy. If an opportunity comes, it comes, but it’s all about consistency for me. That’s my main goal.”
