AFL 2017 Round 21 - West Coast v Carlton

Jack Darling celebrates a goal with Luke Partington

First quarter:

8.51: Jamie Cripps makes Carlton pay for a back line cough up by kicking the Eagles' opening goal from 45m.

10.13: Carlton has six of the first seven clearances, including three to Matthew Kreuzer.

14.11: Jack Darling squares things up at 12 points apiece with a beautiful set shot from 35m. Darling has Luke Partington to thank for that goal. The second-year Eagle hit him lace out with a bullet-like inside 50 entry.

17.52: In his fourth season of AFL football, Jeremy McGovern is averaging a career-high 7.6 marks per game for West Coast. With four at this stage of the game tonight, he is well on track to eclipse this mark.

18.13: Jamie Cripps is the beneficiary of a beautiful coast-to-coast play by the Eagles. West Coast claims the lead for the first time this evening.

24.00: Matt Priddis' seven disposals place him atop the leaderboard to this point. The Eagle midfielder is also responsible for three of his teams seven tackles

26.33: It's a Cripps triple treat! The cunning small forward crumbs the Sherrin after it spills loose following a strong tackle from Drew Petrie and snaps truly from 15m out to get the Eagles back in front.

26.40: Three goals for Jamie Cripps matches his season-high, which he achieved in the Eagles Round 1 victory over North Melbourne.

West Coast 4.0 (24) v Carlton 3.3 (21)

Second quarter:

5.26: Josh Kennedy kicks a spectacular 50m goal from the boundary! West Coast increases its advantage to 10 points.

6.43: Four intercept marks for West Coast's Jeremy McGovern equates to one third of the game total across both teams. The Eagles and Blues each have six total.

13.49: Matthew Kreuzer holds a slight edge over Nathan Vardy in head-to-head ruck contests, 11 to 10, and hitouts to advantage four to three.

14.18: Josh Kennedy plucks the ball from Jamie Cripps' hands, runs into some space and snaps truly on his right foot from 15m.

15.32: It looked like the goal might go to 24, but 34 picks up the stat. Mark Hutchings kicks his first goal of the night!

17.03: Matt Priddis shakes a tackle and fires a laser-like handball off to fellow midfielder Jack Redden, who fires a left-foot snap through the major opening.

17.05: Jack Redden kicks just his second goal in his fifteenth game for 2017.

19.06: Dom Sheed gets the ball moving forward with a hurried kick and Josh Kennedy reels it in with sure hands. The Eagles spearhead boots his third goal of the evening with simplest of drop punts from 20m.

22.13: In the last ten minutes, West Coast has disposed of the ball at 74 per cent efficiency compared to Carlton's 46 per cent. In this time, they have also kicked 4.1 to 0.1.

29.00: After Carlton led by 12 points early in the game, West Coast has kicked nine of the last ten goal.

West Coast 9.2 (56) v Carlton 3.7 (25)

Third quarter:

2.32: Five of West Coast's nine goals have been from inside a distance of 30 metres. In contrast, all three of the Blues' goals have been from beyond 30 metres.

10.41: Carlton have kicked the first two goals of the penultimate term to draw within 19 points of the Eagles.

10.45: Marc Murphy has a game-leading eight score involvements for the Blues, including kicking 2.1 himself. The most for an Eagle has been six score involvements for Jamie Cripps.

21.20: Four of Carlton's five third quarter majors have been sourced from a West Coast turnover.

28.46: We've been waiting a long time for a goal and Josh Kennedy delivers after receiving a holding free kick. Scores are tied at 64 points apiece.

West Coast 10.4 (58) v Carlton 9.10 (64)

Fourth quarter:

8.20: West Coast lands the first blow of the final quarter after Josh Kennedy clunks a big contested mark and pierces the uprights with a right-foot snap from point blank range. That goal is also the 10,000th major in the club's history!

8.21: Going into this round, the Eagles Josh Kennedy had an average of 3.9 goals per game, comfortably best in the AFL. His five goals so far tonight leave him tied with Joe Daniher of Essendon for the most kicked in the league in 2017.

13.16: West Coast has the final term advantage in inside 50s ten to two. However, both sides have kicked just a single goal each.

18.01: Luke Partington sticks a solid tackle, wins a free kick and converts his hard work into six points. West Coast lead by 10 points.

18.47: Marc Murphy's 710 metres gained is easily the most of any man of the ground. Next best is Eagle Sam Mitchell with 457 metres.

19.09: Jack Darling is fired up! The tall forward fist pumps the air after nailing a right-foot snap from 15m out to give West Coast a 16-point advantage with eight minutes left on the clock.

24.37: In the last 10 minutes, Eagles ruckman Nathan Vardy has won seven of twelve hitouts. Critically, four have gone to the direct advantage of a teammate.

25.02: JK the ice man! The two-time Coleman medallist nails his set shot from 50m to give West Coast a little more breathing room. We're 15 points up with just over four minutes to play.

31.43: Jack Redden picks up a late major after emerging with the ball in traffic and snapping truly from the goal square.

West Coast 15.10 (100) v Carlton 12.11 (83)
