AFL 2017 First Elimination Final - Port Adelaide v West Coast

Luke Shuey sealed West Coast's semi-final berth with a imperious drop punt from 40m

Classy midfielder Luke Shuey ensured his name would forever be part of West Coast Eagles folklore with his after-the-siren goal that propelled his club to a remarkable victory.

Shuey was taken high in a tackle with about 20 seconds of extra time remaining and as he was composing himself to take his shot the siren sounded.

Port Adelaide held a four-point advantage as Shuey deliberated and then kicked it straight through the middle to clinch one of the great wins in West Coast history.

After the Eagles trailed by 13 points during the period of overtime, it came down to that kick and Shuey delivered it with apparent calm and precision. Doubtless his heart was pounding as he took the shot, but it was never going anywhere other than over the goal umpire’s hat.

Before he slotted through the match-winner he had been the most influential player on the ground, but the conversion sealed his status.

Apart from the 32nd possession that was his second goal of the night, Shuey also won 10 clearances and laid 11 tackles in a brilliant all-round performance.
