Basil Zempilas says West Coast should play the first AFL game at Perth Stadium

Respected Channel Seven broadcaster and football commentator Basil Zempilas says the West Coast Eagles deserve to play the first AFL fixture at the Perth Stadium.

Speaking on 6PR’s Breakfast program this morning, Zempilas said West Coast had earned the right to get first crack at Perth’s newest sporting cauldron.

“West Coast deserve it,” Zempilas stated emphatically.

“Who’s done more out of the two teams for football in this state? One team has won three premierships and one hasn’t. This is a new stadium; they deserve to go first, West Coast.”

Zempilas’ endorsement bolsters the club’s already strong case to play its 2018 season-opening match at the new Burswood facility.

Due to an alternating policy agreed upon in recent years, by rights it is West Coast’s turn to host the first game in WA next year as a result of Fremantle having that honour in 2017.

Additionally, it must also be acknowleged that for the past 23 years since Fremantle joined the AFL, West Coast has only played nine round one games in front of its home crowd, whereas the Dockers have had that privilege on 14 occasions.
