West Coast will go into Friday’s 2017 NAB AFL Draft with eight picks up its sleeve courtesy of some crafty work during October’s Trade Period. The Eagles will take picks 13, 21, 26, 32, 37, 69, 87 and 105 into the national ballot.

Let’s take a look at how the club and its rivals have used the aforementioned selections in previous drafts to snap up some of the game’s most revered stars and serviceable athletes.

Pick 32:

The West Coast Eagles have only had pick No.32 at its disposal once, in 2014 when it selected athletic utility Tom Lamb. The Dandenong Stingrays product played just one game for the club – a 10-disposals, four-mark and one-goal effort against the Western Bulldogs in round one, 2015 – before he was delisted by the Eagles earlier this year.

However, several other clubs have used the second-round selection to snare a slew of long-time servants. The Western Bulldogs recruited 265-game veteran Daniel Giansiracusa with pick No.32 in the 1999 draft, while Hawthorn secured 2007 all-Australian and 2008 premiership star Campbell Brown with the selection in 2001. Other notables to go at pick No.32 include Adelaide/Melbourne midfielder Bernie Vince (2005), Adelaide/Sydney ruck-forward Kurt Tippett (2006), North Melbourne/Collingwood utility Levi Greenwood (2007) and 2016 premiership-winning Bulldog come Docker Joel Hamling (2011).

Pick 26:

West Coast secured arguably one of its biggest draft steals when it recruited bullocking West Perth product Jack Darling with pick No.26 in the 2010 AFL Draft. The now 25-year-old has been one of the Eagles’ most consistent players and recently earned life membership with the club upon playing his 150th game in blue and gold.

He won an AFL Rising Star nomination in his debut season, claimed the club’s leading goal-kicker crown in 2012, was named in the AFL Players’ Association 22under22 team on three occasions (2012, 2013 and 2014) and has placed in the top 10 of West Coast’s Club Champion Award five times from his seven seasons at the Eagles.

Other clubs have used pick No.26 to secure some of the game’s top talents, including serviceable defender Garrick Ibbotson (Fremantle, 2005), 2016 premiership Tiger Shane Edwards (Richmond, 2006), dogged on-baller Travis Colyer (Essendon, 2009), star midfielder Jack Viney (Melbourne, 2012) and 2017 all-Australian Zach Merrett (Essendon, 2013).
