Chris Masten and Liam Duggan slugged it out for West Coast's 2km time trial crown this morning

Chris Masten added another time trial crown to his collection following this morning’s 2km test at the Western Australian Athletics Stadium.

The 28-year-old was locked in a tight tussle with fellow midfielder Liam Duggan for most of the journey before he edged ahead down the back straight to claim victory.

Several Eagles recorded personal best times in wet, wintry conditions.

Second-year player Francis Watson paced himself to perfection en route to recording a new personal benchmark, while key forwards Matthew Allen and Jake Waterman kept pace with some of the club’s best runners.

Dashing defenders Tom Cole and Jackson Nelson improved on their previous benchmarks, as did budding small forward Willie Rioli.

Brayden Ainsworth was the pick of the 2017 draftee crop, but a number of other first-year Eagles acquitted themselves with distinction during their first AFL pre-season time trial.

Jarrod Brander looked comfortable during the trying run and Jack Petruccelle demonstrated his sprinting prowess as he approached the finish line.
