Supply doesn't guarantee JK will fire: Simpson

Kennedy is a huge addition for the Eagles

West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson says just because his side has achieved strong supply into its forward 50 in the opening three rounds does not mean returning superstar Josh Kennedy is on the verge of a goal-fest when he returns to football on Saturday night.

The Eagles have booted the 6th most points for the season off the back of the 2nd most inside 50s in the competition so far in 2018.

The Eagles spearhead had his season put on hold due to ankle and knee surgery in the off-season and has been working his way back to full fitness over the last few weeks.

The dual Coleman medallist is obviously a major addition for the 5th-placed Eagles, but Simpson said the Eagles would have to adjust to his presence inside 50.

“That’s the next step for us, we lose Liam Ryan who’s been an excitement-machine for us, the unpredictability of our forward line has been an asset and a strength, albeit it’s been quite young,” Simpson said on Friday.

“Supply has been good, is it a pattern for us? Probably not quite yet.

“We need to get through probably another half a season to have that real predictability that we’re going to get good supply.

“How does JK compliment that is the next phase for us.”

The Eagles were at times seen as a tad one-dimensional heading inside 50 last season, with Kennedy booting the vast majority of his side’s goals and was understandably the club’s number one target inside 50 by some margin.

But with the addition of exciting youngsters Jake Waterman, Willie Rioli, Daniel Venables complimenting seasoned forwards in Jamie Cripps, Jack Darling and Mark LeCras, the Eagles’ forward line’s unpredictability has been a major asset.

“That’s the challenge for us, can we continue to do that with someone with so much presence in our front half,” he said.

“That’s not a bad problem to have, we’ll work through that, I’m sure there’ll be moments where we disconnect and we don’t take the right option.

“But hopefully there’s more good ones than bad, it’s a good problem to have.”
