The West Coast Eagles expect elite ball user Lewis Jetta to be available for selection ahead of the first Western Derby at Optus Stadium.

Jetta was a late out for the club’s clash with Carlton due to general soreness, but general manager of football Craig Vozzo believed the silky utility would be fit and firing before the club’s match committee convened on Thursday afternoon.

“Jetts was unfortunate last week with some general soreness,” Vozzo said.

“He’s started the week well in terms of his training and we expect him to have a full load by Thursday on the track and then hopefully he’ll be ready to play.”

In more good news, two of the club’s big men will make their first official appearances of season 2018 during East Perth’s battle with Peel at Leederville Oval on Sunday.

Nathan Vardy and Tony Olango have emerged from the club’s rehabilitation group after overcoming respective groin and knee issues and will be available to represent the Royals should they get through training.

“Big Tony Olango and Nathan Vardy, they have done a whole lot of prep work in anticipation for this week,” Vozzo said.

“If they get through training, which we are anticipating they will, they will be rolled out at East Perth for their first home and away games for us this year. It’s exciting for us to have two big blokes available at the same time.”

Another young Eagle edging towards his first game of the year is Ryan Burrows.

West Coast’s top pick in the 2017 Rookie Draft has endured a wretched run with illness but Vozzo said he could be available to play in the WAFL this weekend.

“He had a viral issue that really knocked him about for quite a few weeks and during that phase he also had his wisdom teeth removed,” Vozzo said.

“It’s been a big period but he’s improving rapidly and hopefully if he gets through this week he should be available for selection. If it’s not this week it’ll be definitely next week.”

Vozzo also offered an explanation for Luke Partington’s absence from East Perth’s line-up last week – revealing the third-year player suffered a minor hamstring injury at training – and provided an update on first-year Eagle Hamish Brayshaw, who is working his way back from arthroscopic knee surgery.

“Late last week young Luke strained a very low grade hamstring at the end of the week and he wasn’t able to play at the weekend. It’s likely to set him back a further week,” Vozzo said.

“Hamish is probably tracking a little slower in his rehab than we would have hoped for but he is still positive and so are we. He’ll have a quiet week this week and we’ll slowly build him back to full fitness.”
