West Coast Eagles forward Jack Darling is already adored by young fans across the country, but he’s now taken on a role that will see him become a role model of far greater importance.

Darling was announced as the new ambassador for Ronald McDonald House Perth, and joins cricketing legend Adam Gilchrist as the face of the charity in WA.

Darling, 21, is looking forward to doing as much as he can for the families at the house.

“We’re going to be there for support, and hopefully put some smiles on some kid’s faces,” said Darling.

“Just giving them an hour or two as often as possible, just to hang out with us and forget about their problems for a little bit, and just help out wherever I can.

“It’s really hard for the other siblings as well, with their parents so focused on the other kids, so talking to them as well to help them get through it,” he added.

Gilchrist, who has been patron of the house for over a decade, is thrilled with the appointment.

“We see this as a fantastic announcement for Ronald McDonald House and the families and children that come here.

“It’s a mentoring role and a friend role for the families and children of Ronald McDonald House,” he said.

Gilchrist, admired by millions of cricket fans around the world, was quick to realise where he stood once Darling was appointed as the new ambassador in WA.

“When the initiative came about, I very quickly realised that it’s great to have someone like myself that the parents recognise, and now we’ve got someone that the kids recognise,” he quipped.

“Even in my house I’m forgotten, my son’s asked me to get Jack to sign his Eagles jumper.”

Darling remained modest, but says he’s keen to use his notoriety with young children to help him in his new role.

“The best thing about my job is people look up to me, so if I can make a difference in people’s live then I’ll grab that all the time,” he said.

“I love to give back, I’m lucky I have the time to do it.

“I’m not taking over from Gilly, we’re a team, and I’ll definitely be asking him a few questions.

“He can hopefully be a bit of a mentor for me as well.”
