West Coast legends are encouraging supporters to bring cans of food to this Sunday’s match to be donated to WA’s homeless through charity initiative, Cans For A Cause.

In return for their generosity, fans will be given a good hard dose of nostalgia, with past Eagle greats including Dean Kemp, Peter Matera, Phil Matera, David Wirrpanda, Drew Banfield, Michael Braun, Michael Brennan, Adrian Barich, Rowan Jones, Brett Jones, Mitchell White, Wally Matera, David Hart and Craig Turley at the ground on match day accepting donations.

And for any West Coast supporters who grew up in the ‘90s and remember these players back in their glory days, you can rest assured, the boys will happily step back in to the limelight for fan autographs and photos on Sunday.

The Cans For A Cause charity campaign has been pioneered by West Coast dual premiership player Don Pyke, and will see him and his fellow teammates stationed at gates 8, 10, 19 and 26 at this Sunday’s match accepting canned good donations.

The donations will be given to Foodbank WA, the state’s largest hunger relief organisation.

“Foodbank rescues edible but surplus food and groceries from the country’s farmers, manufacturers and retailers,” Pyke explains.

“They then donate it to more than 1,200 charities and 420 schools, and is distributed to adults and children in need.

“There are 13,000 people in WA struggling with homelessness, and nearly 350,000 who are facing the great risk of falling into poverty. It has become increasingly difficult for many low income Western Australians to secure and maintain rental accommodation, let alone purchase a home of their own.

“If we can help in some way, just by bringing a can of food to a football match, then hopefully we make a world of difference to people in need.”
