International students from Edith Cowan University and the University of Western Australia were invited into the West Coast Eagles Football Club this season to what was for many, their first Australian Rules football experience.

The participants represented a vast array of countries across the globe including Singapore, Malaysia, India, Vietnam, England, USA, Canada, Brunei and Denmark, and all were excited to learn more about Australia’s national game.

As a part of the West Coast Eagles 101 program, participants were treated to a comprehensive overview of the game, including an explanation of the rules, positions, teams and game highlights, combined with a behind-the-scenes look at the West Coast Eagles Football Club and the football facilities at Domain Stadium.

The highlight for all was the opportunity to attend a live AFL fixture, which came for first semester students when the West Coast Eagles took on GWS Giants in Round 5, and again for second semester students when the West Coast Eagles hosted the Western Bulldogs in Round 21. Both of these well-attended matches resulted in big wins for the Eagles, creating a tremendous atmosphere for the new fans to be a part of.

Kenneth Aiden Foo spoke on behalf of the University of Western Australia’s international students.

“We had a ton of fun! It was great to get to learn about a totally new sport and at the same time get to go behind the scenes of one of the best teams. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at the game too!"

ECU Guild’s Vice-President of Social Activity, Trent Barron also endorsed the program and looked forward to the opportunity continuing for future international students.

“Working together with the West Coast Eagles to provide international students with a genuine Australian experience helped introduce new fans to the game and provided them with a unique experience.”

“We are looking forward to providing future students with a chance to engage with the club and continue this amazing program.”
