Young West Coast Eagles defender Tom Barrass showing signs he is capable of graduating to AFL level if he is to get a call up anytime soon.

In a key moment in the match playing for East Perth at the weekend, Barrass left his man to attack a bouncing football beating an East Fremantle opponent, gaining possession and in turn changing the momentum of the game.

Barrass played down the incident when speaking to The West Australian, saying the strong focus on development at the West Coast Eagles has placed him in good stead.

Eagles defence as good as we've seen

“It was my time to go,” Barrass told The West Australian.

“We have been working at West Coast on decision making, on support versus the press.

“I have to decide whether I can impact the contest by leaving my man and going for the ball or staying and trying to mark or spoil.”

Barrass appears to be the next key defender in line after injuries to Eric Mackenzie and Mitch Brown, with the 19-year-old adding he’s confident he can get the job done if he is selected to play his first AFL game.

Backline belief

“It’s part of my game to give it my all in every single contest,” he said.

“If I am given the opportunity I would hope to do the same.

"I wouldn’t say I am a Jeremy McGovern, but hopefully that is what I will develop into.”
