The entire West Coast Eagles squad was out in force yesterday, presenting trophies to winning schools from the 2013 Eagles Cup competition.

Eagles Cup, which is a joint initiative between the West Coast Eagles, BHP Billiton and the West Australian Football Commission, is WA’s premier primary inter-school competition for years five to seven students.

More than 30 primary schools across metropolitan WA enjoyed a visit from Eagles stars, who dropped in on the students to thank them for taking part in the competition, participate in question and answer sessions, sign autographs and pose for photos.

Teachers and students across the state were thrilled with the players’ sincerity and generosity, and willingness to pass on their stories and experiences to the next generation.

Eagles sharp shooter Josh Hill was a hit out at Pickering Brook Primary School, where he took the entire school out onto the oval for an impromptu kick to kick session, and Matt Priddis was noted for passing on life lessons as well as his footy smarts during his visit to Beldon Primary School.

Luke Shuey and Scott Lycett were the guests of honour at Westminster Primary School, and Shuey said it was terrific to see so many kids involved in the program.

“I was blown away by the amount of kids that have taken interest in the Eagles Cup,” he said.

“It’s is a great way for kids to get involved in footy.

“Not only is it a great way to stay active and a part of a great program, but sport is one of the best ways to make friends, keep fit and healthy, and learn how to be part of a team.

“The main thing about the competition is team work and helping each other; it’s not just about who are the best at footy,” Shuey explained.

Thanks to the West Coast Eagles' principal community partner BHP Billiton, the Eagles Cup competition has become more popular every year, with more than 12,000 primary school students competing in 2013.
