Staff from the West Coast Eagles happily donated their time at the weekend all in the name of charity.

It was Telethon weekend and more than 20 staff, along with Rick the Rock and superstar ruckman Nic Naitanui, manned the phone rooms on Sunday eagerly taking down donations from thousands of generous West Australians.

And how generous the people of WA can be.

This year Telethon raised a record total of $20,701,272 million, bringing the total raised since it started in 1968 to more than $150 million.

Now 46 years old, Telethon has raised money for thousands of WA children by raising money for Princess Margaret Hospital, the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research and about 50 other beneficiaries.

West Australians opened their hearts and dug deep into their pockets over the 26-hour event and smashed last year’s then record total of $16,805,622.

West Coast Eagles ruckman Nic Naitanui, who manned the phones for four hours on Sunday, said it was great to play a small part in a sensational weekend.

“We all had such a great time,” Naitanui said.

“It really was a pleasure to go in and help out.

“Telethon is a West Australian institution and to help raise such a huge amount for the kids is sensational.

“Everyone involved should be congratulated; over $150 million over the years is absolutely awesome.”
