West Coast continued its support of the Cancer Council of Western Australia’s ‘Me No Hair Day’ today, with Eagle defender Will Schofield shaving off his iconic beard to help raise money for cancer research.

Schofield took to social media a fortnight ago to announce the fact the he was trying to raise over $5,000 for the cause and in return he would remove his highly publicised facial hair.

Within a three-day period, the defender had reached his target and promptly encouraged fans to continue to donate, setting a new target of $10,000, which was surpassed before today’s big shave.

While Schofield admitted to getting slightly nervous as the blades came out, the defender is happy the money raised is going to worthy cause.

"We tipped it over the $10,000 mark today. That was the aim," Schofield said.

"The amount my beard shave has raised so far is $17,610, which is pretty remarkable.

"It’s a great cause, the Cancer Council of WA, and hopefully the money goes to a good place.

"Special mention goes to the guys at 96fm, who auctioned off a piece of beard and raised an extra $1, 725. Not sure what the winning bidder is planning on doing with it, straight to the pool room I would think.

"And Timothy Guest from Infinite Wealth who donated a whopping $5,000 to the cause. We're really all astounded at how generous people have been."

Brook Sly from the Cancer Council of Western Australia praised the club’s continued partnership with ‘Me No Hair Day’.

“Me No Hair has been going for over ten years, with this being the ninth year that the Eagles have been involved,” said Sly.

“We are really pleased that Will has come on board in such a big way. Obviously it’s for a really good cause.

“Last year we raised over $120,000 and this year we are aiming for over $150,000.

“We have people aged from five to 75 years old that do the event each year. It’s such a great way for people to get involved.

“It’s fantastic that we have had this partnership over this time. We are really proud of it.”

Beau Waters, who is an acting ambassador for the Cancer Council of Western Australia, praised his fellow defender helping to bring further awareness to the cause.

“We are very thankful for Will shaving his beard today as it’s for a great cause,” Waters said.

“It’s our ninth year we have been involved and we have raised in excess of $800,000, which is a great achievement.

“Obviously the disease cancer is omnipresent both in Western Australia and Australia-wide and for West Coast to be involved with the Cancer Council of WA, it’s a very rewarding feeling.

“We have a lot of community engagement as a club and we believe that is one of our real competitive advantages.

“We like to give back to the people who make our job possible and who support us hard."
