If the West Coast Eagles match committee is searching for a like-for-like replacement in scouring its squad for the man to assume the position of suspended defender Beau Waters, options abound after a weekend of WAFL action.

Lewis Stevenson and Mitch Brown head the list, depending upon the needs for Thursday’s confrontation with Carlton, while Ashley Smith and Gerrick Weedon are other possible options.

Stevenson has been a consistently strong performer for Claremont and again excelled in the Tigers’ after-the-siren loss to East Perth on Sunday. Stevenson had 26 possessions and was typically efficient with his ball distribution.

Weedon, recognised more for his forward line capabilities, returned to Claremont’s senior team in defence and was also solid across four quarters where his defensive pressure and tackling skills kept his immediate opponents under constant pressure.

Brown has also been in solid form for East Fremantle and again performed a strong lock-down role while Smith resumed from an ankle injury to be one of the best for Perth.

While Claremont would have been disappointed with the loss to East Perth, who clinched a one-point win with the final kick of the day, midfielder Tom Swift produced another prolific ball-winning performance.

Unfortunately, emerging forwards Jeremy McGovern and Anton Hamp did not impact the game as they would have desired.

Swift was one of two players who played for West Coast against Brisbane who played in the WAFL. The other was Ashton Hams, who also picked up plenty of football against Swan Districts and finished his game off with two goals.

Midfielder Koby Stevens also continued his fine season with East Fremantle and again ensured his name would be among the short list for a recall with 20 possessions and four tackles while in the reserves there was further good news.

Forward Brad Dick played a half for the second week in succession and again kicked a couple of goals from a handful of possessions, while Callum Papertalk also did well in defence.

Simon Tunbridge has been consistent for Perth and continues to enhance his understanding of playing in defence while forward Fraser McInnes had 16 possessions, five marks and two goals for the Demons.

Small forward Ryan Neates was effective for Claremont with 15 possessions and a goal while Murray Newman returned similar numbers for Swan Districts, though he did not play out the game after a heavy tackle in the third term.

Sadly, young defender Blayne Wilson, who has had a terrific developmental year at Peel Thunder, suffered an ankle fracture early in the game and ruckman Scott Lycett also damaged a knee.
