Eagles stars Daniel Kerr, Josh Kennedy, Ashton Hams, Sam Butler and Ashley Smith teamed up with the West Coast Fever Netball Club for this week’s launch of Cancer Council Western Australia’s 2011 Me No Hair fundraising campaign.

Rookie-listed Hams was the lucky recipient of a two-for-one deal, submitting to a surprise colour from his teammates after Sam Butler took to his curly locks with the clippers.

Ball magnet Kerr was also in luck as he was granted his fortnightly haircut free of charge, while teammates Kennedy, Butler and Smith received complimentary streaks of blue and gold at the hands of Fever stars Caitlin Bassett, Ashlee Howard, Josie Janz and captain Johnanna Curran.

Cancel Council player ambassador Beau Waters may be sidelined with an elbow injury, but this did not prevent him from getting in on the action, albeit in a more ‘supervisory’ role.

“It’s been great to have Western Australian sporting teams unite for such a worthy cause; last year with the Western Force and this year the West Coast Fever,” Waters said.

The Cancer Council’s Me No Hair initiative encourages people to shave their heads or colour their hair to raise funds for essential cancer research, education, prevention programs and support services for patients and their families.

The event has raised over $2 million since it started in WA in 1999 with the aim for 2011 to raise $100,000.

Waters is passionate about his commitment to the organisation and is pleased to see how much it has grown since he first become involved six years ago.

“It’s been terrific and to see it grow and see a bigger turnout each year is a credit to both people in the partnership, West Coast and the Cancer Council,”  he said.

The Eagles support many of the Cancer Council’s key fundraising events, including the Dig Deep campaign which has so far raised over $600,000 for the charity.

Waters urges all Western Australians to support the Me No Hair initiative and reduce the burden of cancer in our community.

“Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Australia, so it’s really important as part of our commitment to the community that we get behind the Cancer Council,” Waters said.

West Coast would like to thank our supporters who have sponsored the players so far, with $804 already raised, helping to kick start the 2011 Me No Hair campaign.
