Emerging midfielders Tom Swift and Scott Selwood, as well as dour defender Pat McGinnity, have committed to the West Coast Eagles’ long-term plan by re-signing with the club.
Swift, Selwood and McGinnity, central figures in the club’s anticipated rise up the AFL ladder in coming seasons, have negotiated new deals in the last couple of weeks which is good news for a club with an eye on the future.
Swift, secured with selection 20 in the 2008 draft having played little football because of two serious knee injuries, has impressed in his two seasons and 20 senior games and continues to grow in stature.
He has played 10 of 15 games this year, largely because two bouts of illness have restricted his availability, but has shown a propensity to gain high possession tallies at both AFL and WAFL levels.
Selwood, the youngest of four brothers in the AFL system, has been another of the positives out of a season which has not delivered the results expected to round 15. He carries the family trait of being ultra-competitive and is also regarded as a young man with outstanding leadership qualities.
He has played 13 of the 15 games this season to take his career tally to 36 and has excelled as a tight-checking defender or in a run-with role through the midfield.
McGinnity has also shown an ability to mark dangerous opposition small forwards. He has a fierce competitive streak and is developing a reputation as no-nonsense competitor who is prepared to sacrifice his game for the team cause. He has played 13 games this season, taking his tally to 20.
“As we build our team and our squad for the future, it is extremely important to have these young players commit to the club,” said Neale Daniher, general manager football operations.
“All three are integral in our future plans and it is good to have them locked away.
“We will continue to hone their skills as they are all very much in the development phase of their careers, but we have no doubt each of them will be key players in our future.
“Apart from the on-field attributes, they are also young players with leadership qualities, adding to their value for our club.”
