After being drafted in 1991, as part of the deal which saw Todd Breman head to Richmond, Connell found himself competing for a place in the most accomplished midfield in the country. He did everything right at Subiaco but could not transfer that into a string of opportunities at the next level and was traded to Adelaide at the end of the 1994 season. Connell, a prolific ball-winner, enjoyed immediate success with the Crows, winning the club’s fairest and best award in 1995 and then played in the club’s premiership teams of 1997 and 1998. Unfortunately his AFL career came to a halt at 99 games.
