A champion midfield player, West Coast drafted Watson in the pre-season ballot of 1992 after the star Bomber had announced his retirement. Watson never had any intention of playing with his ‘new’ club, although he did make one visit to Perth. At the end of that 1992 season West Coast de-listed him and Watson shocked the football world when Essendon convinced him to play one more. That proved a handy decision for both player and club with Watson playing in the 1993 premiership with the Bombers while also surpassing the 300 game milestone.
