The opportunity to dredge something positive from a year of frustration has been presented to West Coast Eagles pair Brent Staker and Ryan Davis, while Matt Spangher received a strong vote of confidence from the match committee.

Davis, Staker and Spangher have all been included to play Adelaide in the round 21 encounter at AAMI Stadium on Saturday – coming in to replace Pat McGinnity (ill), Mitch Brown (foot) and Chris Masten (knee).

Injuries have cruelled Staker’s season while Davis, after an amazing debut season in 2008, has had to fight for every opportunity.

Staker, who has broken bones in his hand on two separate occasions, has managed just four senior games to take his career tally to 108 and would love to produce his best football in the closing couple of matches.

The popular utility player offers the match committee flexibility and experience with his capacity to play forward or run through the midfield, as he did so effectively on a couple of occasions last year.

Davis, who joined the club under the NSW scholarship system almost two years ago, played 11 games in a remarkable start to his AFL career. Initially he was expected to spend the whole season – and more – learning his craft in the WAFL, but so quickly did he learn that he played half the games in AFL ranks.

With a string of injuries creating opportunities, Davis stepped off the rookie list and accepted the challenges. When he played two early games he would have been confident of building his tally even further, but has not played senior football since round three.

The hard-nosed utility player was a natural replacement for McGinnity, who has played in defence and through the midfield in his early games.

Spangher has been recalled immediately to senior football after missing a couple of  games with a tight hamstring and then playing with East Fremantle last week.

He, too, was a logical replacement for the injured Brown.

The season ended prematurely for Brown when he fractured a metatarsal bone and Masten strained a poster cruciate ligament in the victory over North Melbourne last week.
