The West Coast Eagles squad spent the afternoon out in local schools today, spreading the important message behind the national health and wellbeing program, 1Seven.

The initiative promotes healthy behaviours and lifestyle choices for children and their families, encouraging children to become more active and improve their nutrition will promote improved health and reduce the risk of poor health later in life.

The message is simple:  Move more, eat well.

The program’s objectives are based on Australian Government guidelines which recommend that children participate in at least one hour of vigorous physical activity and eat five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit - seven serves in total - each day.

Program partners, the Australian Football League and Netball Australia, have combined to promote and deliver the 1Seven message and activities.

West Coast’s Mark Nicoski joined teammates Mark LeCras, Beau Waters and Brett Jones at Carine Primary School for a coaching clinic with some lucky kids, followed by a question-answer session.

Nicoski said getting the right balance of food was an important part of a football player’s preparation and he was pleased to be sharing his knowledge with tomorrow’s footy stars.

“We’re down today here with a few of the boys, getting the kids out for an hour of exercise and also giving them a bit of an insight into what we do and how we stay fit and healthy," Nicoski said.

“I’m one of those people who really enjoys their food, growing up with a European family, but we have to monitor everything we do with food and drink. We’ve got a nutritionist who helps us out with that, and today’s about sharing our knowledge with the children.”

Based on recent research, one in four Australian children is either overweight or obese.  This could lead to developmental problems such as poor body-image and low self-esteem; later in life it could lead to cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes.  With a balanced diet and an active lifestyle, the risk of developing these problems is significantly reduced.

1Seven offers a range of competitions, rewards and incentives for schools, teachers, students and parents to stimulate interest, motivate, and keep people involved. Each month, from March to November, a school will be randomly selected from each state from the online registration list and they will win a sports kit for their school containing football and netball equipment.

Teachers can register to be part of the 1Seven Program and will then receive regular updates and the chance to win great prizes. Click here to register your school: www.1seven.com.au.
