Every two years, the West Coast Eagles Football Club travel to Cambodia with 12 first and second year players, along with senior coaching staff and others. As part of the clubs’ development program, the purpose of the trip is to take the players out of their comfort zones, and to show them the hardships faced by many Cambodians.

In addition, the trip is to demonstrate that players can make a difference to the lives of people through their own direct efforts. On the 2011 trip, the group built 20 houses in Kompong Speu province, in the small village of Tra Pang Saray.

These 20 houses now provide secure shelter for 150 people including 109 children. Life changing for the children, and a great achievement for the club. The trips to Cambodia are considered by all to be highly successful; motivating people within the club to contribute even further to the children of Cambodia.

In 2011, the club also successfully fundraised more than $50,000 for the Tabitha Foundation to fund the construction of a school in the Cambodian village of Koh Kong.

West Coast fans were called upon to purchase a copy of club chaplain Paul Morrison’s CD ‘Picking Up The Pieces’ and bid on signed memorabilia in an online auction. The club also received several individual donations for the cause.

Thanks to this generous support, the fundraising target was reached within six months and the club’s dream of building the school has become a reality.

The club’s leadership and professional development coach peter Worsfold, who leads the group on their trips to Cambodia, says the school will be completed and in use by the time the West Coast Eagles visit Cambodia again in November 2012.

“The acknowledgement at the school will read ‘Donated by the West Coast Eagles’, so the players will be able to see how our fundraising efforts pay off.

“By the time the school is built, the Tabitha Foundation expects to have 500 children enrolled from three surrounding villages, with the Cambodian government supplying teachers and schoolbooks.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has been involved in some way as part of this significant and life-changing project. You can all be proud that your contribution has had a profound effect on the lives of so many disadvantaged children and families, providing them with real hope for a better future and quality of life.”
