Speaking to senior coach Adam Simpson and looking at the talent on West Coast’s list helped convince Sam Petrevski-Seton that a trade back to his home state was the best move for his football career.

After five seasons at Carlton, the 23-year-old pulled on the blue and gold for the first time on Monday at Mineral Resources Park, and is excited for a fresh start in the west.

“I’ve had a chat to ‘Simmo’ a couple of times now leading into this process and he just spoke more about 'you’re coming over to a great club', and I think it is, and the people that they have in this organisation is something to look forward to,” Petrevski-Seton said.

“The playing group they have and the style they play really attracted me and made my decision to come back."

Petrevski-Seton played 94 games for the Blues in a variety of roles, and the former No.6 draft pick from Claremont is eyeing a mid-forward position at the Eagles where he can showcase his skills.

“I really want to be playing my best footy and hopefully that’s through the midfield, forward, probably more mid if I’m lucky," he said.

“Hopefully that role and I can settle in and that’s the position where I can play my best footy for the team.”

Rated highly as a junior, the Halls Creek product’s talent is obvious.

In his seventh game, Petrevski-Seton claimed three Brownlow Medal votes after picking up 21 touches and booting two goals against Carlton’s arch-rival Collingwood in front of more than 70,000 fans at the MCG.

It’s a level he knows he can achieve more consistently, and his focus is already on having a clear run at pre-season training to build chemistry with his new teammates – including star ruckman Nic Naitanui.

But first things first, and there’s nothing more important than family, who Petrevski-Seton hasn’t seen in more than a year.

“My family up from Halls Creek rarely make it to Melbourne – it’s a massive trip for them. To be here in Perth I can really settle back in to my home state and they can come watch me play a bit,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to heading up there in the next couple of weeks just to help promote the community and town just getting vaccinated.

“Doing my part in that area helping the community out is something that I’m looking forward to.”

Petrevski-Seton was also helping promote another important message on Monday after shaving his head in support of Carlton co-captain Sam Docherty, who has been diagnosed with testicular cancer, in a bid to raise funds for the Peter Mac foundation.

More than $130,000 had been raised for the cause by last Friday.
